Madison, WI Hail: A 5-Year Look Back
2021: There were 4 hail reports within 10 miles of Madison, the largest quarter-sized. The bigger story was late July, when two EF1 tornadoes damaged trees and roofs in the Madison suburbs of West Middleton and Verona.
2022: Nine hail reports were logged. Radar also detected hail near Madison on several dates through the year, including May, June, July, and September.
2023: Ten hail reports were logged, the largest 1.5 inches. On April 19, multiple reports of quarter-sized hail came in north of Middleton. On October 23, one report described golf ball-sized hail that dented cars on Madison’s east side.
2024: Eight hail reports were logged. Radar showed hail near Madison in July and September.
2025: Activity jumped. There were about 30 hail reports within 10 miles of Madison, the largest tennis ball-sized (2.25 inches). Most came on May 15, when 24 reports were logged within 10 miles.
2026: The April 14 storm was the most damaging in this stretch. Hail measured 3.25 inches in Madison, and hail as large as 4 inches was reported to have caused widespread damage around the area. Many west side homes had major roof damage, and local roofers were flooded with calls.
The takeaway for homeowners
Hail doesn’t have to be baseball-sized to matter. Even quarter- to golf ball-sized hail can bruise shingles and dent gutters and siding, and repeated storms over several years can add up. Damage is often invisible from the ground, and insurance claim deadlines can be limited, so an inspection after any hail event is worth it.
GL Construction LLC can inspect your roof and siding for hail damage and walk you through your options. Contact us today.
FAQ
Answers before you call
Still have a question? Our dispatch team is happy to talk it through — no pressure, no obligation.
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
Look for dented or bent gutters and vents, cracked or bruised shingles, and missing granules. Hail damage is often hard to see from the ground, so a professional inspection is the best way to be sure.
Does small hail cause damage?
It can. Even quarter- to golf ball-sized hail can bruise shingles and dent siding and gutters, especially if your roof is older or has been hit by several storms.
How soon should I get an inspection?
As soon as it’s safe after a storm. Small problems can lead to leaks and interior water damage, and your insurance policy may limit how long you have to file a claim.
Will insurance cover hail damage?
Many homeowners policies cover hail damage, but coverage and deductibles vary. Check your policy or ask your insurance company. We can provide documentation of the damage to support your claim.
Do I need to replace my whole roof?
Not always. Some damage can be repaired, while widespread damage may call for a full replacement. An inspection will tell you which one applies.
What should I do right after a hailstorm?
Take dated photos of any damage, cover openings with a tarp to prevent more damage, contact your insurance company, and schedule an inspection.
